Changes in body composition and weight during the menopause transition
Published 2019Reviewer Insight1/6/2026This observational study has the inherent limitation of being unable to establish causation. It specifically addresses body composition changes during the menopausal transition and finds a slight increase in lean mass loss around the time of final menstruation compared to before and after. The underlying cause is difficult to determine since this period may be confounded by other transition-related factors like sleep disturbances, anxiety, and gastrointestinal issues. Despite these limitations, this is a solid study showing a possible correlation. The findings also reveal racial differences, with White and Japanese women showing greater lean mass loss.

Changes in physical activity and body composition in postmenopausal women over time
Published 2013Reviewer Insight11/6/2025This study is very well done but it doesn’t address the menopause transition as a factor for loss or not of lean mass, so the result of loss on body mass can be associated to aging and menopause transition at the same time since all women will go through that period.

Systematic review on the relationship between menopausal hormone replacement therapy, sarcopenia, and sarcopenia-related parameters
Published 2025Reviewer Insight1/6/2026This paper reviews and synthesizes 43 other studies (15 RCTs and 28 observational studies) about HRT and sarcopenia. The authors state: "Initially, we hoped to perform meta-analysis of the RCTs ... Heterogeneity was extremely high...". Results are "synthesised and are presented narratively". Due to this fact, we will add the most important paper for this review to evaluate the evidence.
