Gender effects on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder in adults, revisited
Published 2004Reviewer Insight12/5/2025This study included 219 adults with ADHD (137 men, 82 women; average age 37.6 years) and 215 matched controls (134 men, 81 women; average age 38.7 years), with no significant differences in age or gender distribution between groups. The ADHD sample had a male-to-female ratio of 1.7:1. However, sample sizes for comorbid disorders were very small, making statistical analysis challenging; women with ADHD showed higher rates of anxiety related disorders than men; and there are contradictions between the statistical results and the authors' interpretations (particularly regarding the interaction between ADHD and anxiety). The study also includes an unclear supplementary analysis with non-significant results, making it difficult to draw reliable conclusions from this research.
